United States, June 14, 2010
In his recent trip to the cities of New York and Washington D.C., the Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Rafael Espada, held a series of meetings with leaders of migrant associations in order to hear the concerns of Guatemalans in the United States politically supported by the Embassy and consulates of Guatemala in such country.
In New York, the meeting was led by Consul Rosa Maria de Mora and Dr. Alvaro Argueta, representative of the Advisory Group of the National Migrant Care Guatemala (CONAMIGUA) from New York, with whom held a preparatory meeting for the hearing with the Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, in relation to the application for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) by the Government of Guatemala. In Washington DC, Vice President spoke with the elected members of the Advisory Council of CONAMIGUA in that area, Mr Marco Sanchez and Mr. Radulph Santizo.
The Vice President Espada met with Mrs. Doris Meissner, Program Director of Immigration Policy for America, who gave a presentation of the landscape of challenges and opportunities for U.S. immigration reform. Ms. Meissner noted that the issue is extremely complex, requiring the support of Democratic and Republican leaders, who must show interest in moving forward a joint proposal to the Senate and the House of Representatives of the United States. In addition, Mr. Aaron Terrazas, Associate Analyst Migration Policy Institute, presented statistics of the population of Guatemalan migrants in the United States, the issue of integration, education and the role of the Guatemalan labor force.
In 2009, the Department of Homeland Security estimated a Guatemalan population of 480,000 unauthorized migrants in the United States. This population is concentrated in the cities of California (34%), Florida (8%), New York (7%), Texas (7%) and New Jersey (5%).
