Vice President Espada Meets General Secretary of the Organization of American States

The Vice-President, Dr. Rafael Espada, and a delegation consisting of Deputy Foreign Minister, Miguel Angel Ibarra, Ambassador of Guatemala in the United States, Francisco Villagran and the Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the OAS, Jorge Skinner-Klee, held a meeting with General Secretary of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Insulza.
The Vice President briefed the Secretary General of the recent political developments in the country, including the recent resignation of General Attorney, Conrado Reyes, and the resignation of United Nations Commissioner, Carlos Castresana. The Vice President said the Government of Guatemala supports the ruling of the Constitutional Court to reopen the selection process of the Attorney General. At the same time, Dr. Espada summarized the achievements of his recent visit to the United Nations to request the appointment of new chief of the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala. The Vice President concluded that these events opened a window of opportunity for the Government and all sectors of Guatemalan society should be unified to support the strengthening of the administration of justice in the country.
In addition, Vice President Espada described the initiatives of financial transparency and access to information submitted to the United Nations Programme for Development (UNDP).

The Secretary Insulza received a copy of the plan of work of the Commission against the Laundering of Money and Other Assets and welcomed the adoption of measures to combat corruption.
Similarly, the Secretary Insulza expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the Inter-American Convention against Corruption and its Follow-up Mechanism implementation (MESICIC), which are the main instruments of cooperation to prevent and eradicate corruption in the Americas to which Guatemala is an active member.
Finally, at the recent natural disasters that affected the country, the participants agreed to evaluate the Inter-American Convention to Facilitate Disaster Assistance.
