The Launch of the Regional Development Plan of the Pacific Coast

A Sea of Opportunity has the objective of creating a developed and visionary region to confront this new era of technology and be a hub of opportunities, both for Guatemala and the Central America Region.
 
This project is coordinated by the Vice-Presidency and as a development agency in charge is the Territorial Management Office of SEGEPLAN. The launch of the Regional Development Plan of the Pacific Coast was held in the Hall of the Flags at the National Palace of Culture and was attended by Dr. Rafael Espada, Vice President, Karin Slowing, Secretary of Planning and Programming of the Presidency-SEGEPLAN- , Dr. Luis Zurita, Deputy Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Claudia Santizo, Director of National Council of Protected Areas-CONAP-, Rodolfo Chang, President of the Commonwealth of the South and Mayors. Diplomatic Corps, Mayors of the region and civil organizations. 
 

The Vice President, Dr. Rafael Espada with the commitment and responsibility that characterize him, creates a new "Regional Development Plan of the Pacific Coast", which aims to achieve a line of work involving entities of the Municipalities, central government, international and social organizations, with which it can have a long term vision that allows focus and brings together all efforts to achieve a dynamic and competitive region.
A sea of opportunities in the Pacific Coast is the opportunity to establish the port activity as an engine of employment and identity to create cities and territories orderly and sustainable.
 
 
The Secretary of Segeplan, Karin Slowing Umaña, in her presentation explained that the regional plan covers 10 areas of development that seek to give solutions to the great problems faced by the territory. She emphasized that social investment is a priority to reduce poverty and that the indicators of development in the region will be achieved by working on economic activities that generate employment and make use of resources in a sustainable way, such as fishing, port activities and tourism, among others.
 
The Pacific Coast corridor is an area that activates the entire national economy and unites two of the country's most important borders: Pedro de Alvarado border with El Salvador and Tecum Uman (with Mexico).It is now a densely populated region with continued growth, as well with significant presence of people from different parts of the country in the region have found means of living.
 
Deputy Minister of Environment, Luis Zurita, said the regional plan will allow the implementation of coastal marine policy and stressed the importance of proper planning of watersheds and protected areas for conservation of natural resources and sustainability of the territory.
 
This process will help to rationalize land use and regulate economic activities, seeking the sustainability of land, conservation of ecosystems and preventing degradation and pollution of watersheds.
 
The Mayor of Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa, Rodolfo Chang, representing the mayors of the region, expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative, recalling that the plan was born from a request from the mayors from the Pacific Coast to the Vice President. "That regional vision is the point of reference to build with our neighbors a municipal development plan," he emphasized.
 
The priorities that guide the development of the Pacific coast are:

§ Tourism Development
§ Infrastructure and Mobility Connectivity
§ Port Development
§ Institutional Enforcement
§ Homeland Security
§ Maritime Development
 
The contents of the development plan will be formulated in programs and projects to improve agriculture, preserving green areas, supporting tourism services, increasing the number of jobs and health education services and improving infrastructure in water and sanitation.
 
This initiative is part of the National Planning System, PNS, boosted by Segeplan, aimed at facilitating the development plans of municipalities and departments. These plans will be linked to the national budget to ensure its funding and thus guiding public investment to get where it is really needed.
