Ambassador Kazumi Suzuki, expressed regret for the casualties and damage caused by Tropical Storm "Agatha." "My sincere appreciation to the authorities of the Government of Guatemala for their prompt and swift initial action against this natural disaster. Proof of this is that on Saturday last week, before the arrival of this storm on Guatemalan territory, President Colom had called on the international community and the private sector, with a certainty that the rainfall of this climatic phenomenon would be stronger than Mitch and Stan, which hit the country in 1998 and 2005. It is fortunate that the Government of Guatemala were making preparations for the National Earthquake Drill to be carried out on the 8th of this month, which greatly helped to make the initial response and coordination in this emergency, and will be a good example for the future, but I hope it never turns into a calamity like this one. In this sense I considered a very successful slogan 'one prepared country is a solidarity country.”
Dr. Rafael Espada reiterated his appreciation to the Government and people of Japan for this display of solidarity with Guatemala and said that the assistance will be mobilized as soon as possible to the affected communities.
The donation consists of 80 tents, 1,000 blankets for normal weather, 2,000 blankets for cold weather, 2,000 mattresses, 1,080 portable water tanks, 10 liters each, 20 water purification machines that do not need energy, 10 water storage tanks, and three multipurpose tents.
