Dr. Espada visits storm victims
Guatemala, May 31, 2010.
Today the Vice President of the Republic, Dr. Rafael Espada toured where the depression caused mudslides and blocked roads in order to communicate with other villages.
Dr. Espada went to visit local residents informing them that the damage caused by rain in Guatemala were high. There are over ninety people dead, destroyed homes, damaged pipes and power lines, blocked roads, among others.
"Today Guatemala is trying to recover even though the sky still clouded," said by the Vice President. Some of the places where the roads remain closed: the Pacific Highway at km 32 and 33. Alternate Route: Amatitlán-Barcenas to Antigua Highway. The Inter-American Road is blocked between San Lucas and Chimaltenango. Alternate Route: Parramos Antigua Chimaltenango Highway.
Alejandro Maldonado, Director of Conred, confirmed that the official death toll stands at 92. Also confirmed that there are 54 persons missing, 34 000 people in 97 shelters centers.
In the upcoming days, it will be analyzed and the decision of when to enable the airport for international flights. For now, it continues to be authorized only for helicopters and STOL aircraft type takeoff.
The Vice-President, Dr. Rafael Espada launched the CONRED (National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction Agency) Collection Centre Plan that is active from Monday in each of the departments, where they will be receiving essential items to provide to the people impacted by the passage of the "Tropical Storm Agatha."
